Survival of GMK (green African monkey, kidney) cells exposed to increasing doses of ionising γ-radiation from 99mTcDMSA (a complex of technetium 99mTc and dimercaptosuccinic acid) added to the culture medium) was evaluated. In order to determine the extent of post-radiation changes, the cell count was performed. Addition of bark extracts to the culture medium increased cell survival, when compared both to the group without the radioisotope and to the group treated with technetium in the absence of extract. EPR assay indicated that the extracts from Pinus silvestris and Pinus maritina (Pycnogenol) are effective DPPH radical scavengers. The suggested mechanism of radioprotection may involve antioxidant and antiradical activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
