Understanding building information modelling and its use in the Chinese construction industry.

Building information modelling (BIM) is both a digital modelling method and information integration platform for interoperability in the construction industry. This paper reviews the concepts and features of BIM along with its different meanings, historical evolution and data exchange standards. It then analyses its application in the Chinese construction industry, with examples of recent major projects. It concludes that many civil engineers are still unable to use BIM to its full potential due to implementation complexity and the industry's fragmented production structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
