Abstract

One might view Salamon's essay as something of an historical curiosity, a proto-Jewish-feminist text that may deserve a paragraph in any history of Jewish feminism, but which played no real role in the development of that movement. Salamon claims that the Tosefta was composed before the Mishnah and gives witness to Judaism's original, more egalitarian stance on female ritual participation. Mózes Salamon (1838-1912) was a relatively little-known rabbi living in the Austro-Hungarian Empire who wrote, among his other equally little-known works, a remarkable pamphlet, I The Path of Moses: A Scholarly Essay on the Case of Women in Religious Faith i (original Hebrew title: I Netiv Moshe: Maamar Me kari 'al Mishpat haNashim baEmunah i ).
