Abstract

This article analyzes the Eurocentric representations of the conquerors and colonized present in the manuals that have thematic units referring to the processes of conquest of America and Chile (1492-1598). For this purpose, a methodological approach that combines hermeneutic analysis and the perspective of critical literacy is used to analyze the texts and images of four school books from the Zig-Zag, Santillana and SM publishers. It is concluded that the manuals use, fundamentally, the Eurocentric paradigm to highlight the historical relevance of the European expeditions and to marginalize or attenuate the participation of the conquered, especially the native peoples and non-white women.
