Abstract

The academic world, especially in the United States, has long wondered about the peculiar nature of Leo Strauss' liberalism. The great German thinker, who coined the hyperbolic expression Fiat liberalismus, pereat Plato, has not infrequently been accused of being a reactionary, but a closer analysis of his thought reveals a liberal thinker but critical of the autoimmune diseases of liberal democracy, relativism and nihilism. Strauss' intellectual effort is aimed at tracing in the history of political thought the progressive abandonment of the idea of «natural law», which would lead to the negation of liberalism. The final pages are devoted to the two remedies Strauss proposes: liberal education and the rediscovery of the «classical virtues». [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
