If it is Ogden we are hearing, not Winnicott, then the paper has become a springboard for Ogden's ideas. Ogden's ontological engagement with Winnicott's writing means their voices are "crossed" upon each other, and Ogden's voice has become an "oversound" to Winnicott's. Ogden calls the latter (Winnicott [19], 86-94) "perhaps Winnicott's most difficult paper and certainly one of his most important" (72), while "Communicating and Not Communicating" (Winnicott [18], 197-192) is "one of his most important and daring and, for me, one of his most difficult papers" (33).
