Abstract

Whilst pathogen reduction is effective for a number of these viruses, such as Ebola virus [[5]], transfusion transmission of these agents is either rare or remains theoretical. Whilst this may appear to support pathogen reduction as a key pandemic response strategy, it is important to consider the context of the origins of the HIV pandemic when the ability to rapidly identify a virus and develop screening assays was not available. A more accurate term is "pathogen reduction", given current technologies do not completely eliminate transmission risk for all pathogens and all products and additional testing is required in some scenarios.
