Abstract
- One of the Indonesian iron sand deposits is the Pasirian area of Lumajang district. XRF results show that the iron sand contains of 29.7% Fe element, which is considered large, but the manufacture of it is not optimal yet. Whereas with further processing, iron sand can be prepared into main of toner raw materials. Magnetic characterization of Lumajang iron sand and its comparison with the toner is the first step in the manufacture of the raw materials for the toner. A series of measurements using magnetic and non-magnetic methods was performed in this research. The magnetic method initially using the magnetic susceptibility measurement and magnetic remanent demagnetization. Meanwhile, non-magnetic measurements used were determining the chemical element compositionusing XRF and magnetic mineral morphology by SEM. The measurement results show that the magnetic mineral properties of iron sand and one kind of toner are almost in the same quantity. The similarity of properties shows from the magnetic susceptibility of toner and iron sand which is in the range of 1.9371 ×10−4 m3kg−1 for non-extracted iron sand to 2.1×10−4 m3kg−1for toner. The difference is only in the size and shape of the magnetic mineral grains, but this can be overcome by grinding the magnetic minerals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
