Abstract

Nanomaterials have extensive range of application in the field of food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and textile. In the field of microbial fuel cell technology, nanomaterials majorly used for the modification of component of MFC system i.e., electrodes and membranes. Nanoparticles has potential to enhance the surface area and binding energy of molecules, so it can be used to improve the performance of MFC by the modification of electrodes. Nano-modified electrodes provides the large surface area to the formation of dense and thick biofilm which play important role in the enhancement of the electrochemical performance the fuel cell. Some metal based and carbon nanoparticles help in the growth of dense biofilm, which lead to enhance the transfer of electrons from biofilm to anode and enhance the performance of fuel cell. Several types of nanomaterial are used in the MFC to extend the surface area, biocompatibility and increase the conductivity. This review summarizes the nanoparticles and the modification of electrodes to enhance the performance of MFC. Metal based nanoparticles used in cathode and anode are considered as a better alternative to high-cost Pt. These nanomodified electrodes are more promising in bioenergy generation, nano-biosensing and wastewater treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
