Starting from the unification of Italy, two trajectories converged: the inspiring literary production of identity models and education aimed at the literacy of the poorest population. Expression of this convergence was the school editorial productions which became a valuable communication tool for constructing a national consciousness. The proponents of the Gentile Reform had to measure themselves against the pre-existing «dense and sedimented series of interpretations and representations». In this contribution, we will examine the work of the Commission for the revision of reading books carried out by the Commission for the examination of primary school textbooks, and we will examine a reading text that stands out for its originality and attention to children.
