Abstract
- The origin and development of stoichiometry has been reviewed, after summarizing the large amount of literature on element stoichiometry, with the focus on the application of stoichiometry on marine phytoplankton ecology and microalgae cultivation. The most used ecological stoichiometric models have been introduced to illustrate the composition characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus in microalgae culture media recipe. It has been demonstrated in this long-studied field that the growth rate control of phytoplankton has delicate relationships with environmental factors and the composition of cell elements and its media. The most important point is that the ratio of nitrogen and phosphorus (N/P) is not the only factor to determine the growth of phytoplankton, rather than that, the effect of absolute concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus should be considered in the meantime, especially when nutrient limiting is addressed.
