Abstract

In this welcome addition to the social movement outcomes literature, Donatella della Porta describes how in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis, movements against austerity have introduced democratic innovations which have contributed to the 'acceleration of constitutional processes, the multiplication of referendums, and the emergence of new parties' (p. 161). Through an examination of Podemos in Spain and the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) in Bolivia, della Porta demonstrates how to mistrust of existing center-left parties created an opening for new movement party formations.
