Abstract

This paper analyzes the symmetries and asymmetries that contribute to the construction of the characters in the novel Soldados de Salamina to observe if the symmetric or asymmetric constructions reveal the author's position with respect to the figure of the hero. For that aim, the concept of symmetry in a narrative context is first defined. Then, the symmetries and variations corresponding to two different levels of analysis are studied, referring, on the one hand, to the structure of the work and, on the other, to the characters. The analysis carried out reveals that structural symmetry --or asymmetry-- constitutes in this work a subtle, but effective technique for the construction of the hero, which is anchored in the anonymous, in what remains hidden or lost forever.
