Abstract

The text is a critique of the book "Harriet Martineau. How to observe morals and customs" edited by Capitolina Díaz Martínez. The book presents the work of Harriet Martineau, a founder of sociology, who talks about the methodology and structure of reflective work in the construction of a new science focused on the scientific analysis of society. The work, written in 1838, is considered pioneering and enriches the Eurocentric vision of the time by compiling and expanding topics such as religion and economic policy. The book is structured into three sections: requirements for observation, what to observe, and methodology. Martineau was also a pioneer in studying domestic life, women, and domestic violence, and advocated for gender equality and democratic values. Martineau is recognized as one of the founders of sociology. [Extracted from the article]
