Abstract

In Romania, the humoristic press had an exuberant period at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century: at that time, in Bucharest alone, there were over 300 satire and humoristic magazines or newspapers. During their existence, the magazines published in their pages quotations, epigrams, jokes, maxims, verses, sometimes accompanied by caricatures and illustrations, as well as a series of pamphlets, aimed at the elite of society and the political class. In some cases, the authors were sued several times by those who considered themselves defamed for the texts they published. The article features one of the most interesting humorous newspapers of the 19th century, The Scoffer Lark. This periodical appeared irregularly from 1890-1894 and reappeared, briefly, in 1896. Although it claimed to be a humorous newspaper, in fact, it was an opposition newspaper against the Liberals. The pages contained humorous, amusing and ‟racy" texts intended to embellish the electoral hypocrisy of the rulers. The newspaper's brief appearance shows us once again that the opposition press hasn't had a long history in Romania. Poems, pamphlets and humorous articles flood the pages of The Scoffer Lark, which wants nothing more than to reach its subscribers and to whip the elected representatives' morals through language. It is obvious that the humour gene seems to be part of Romanians' DNA. We pride ourselves on ‟making fun of trouble", and jokes or popular anecdotes have always been part of our heritage. Whether they come from the collective imagination or are creations attributed to various authors, such writings have often made their way into the pages of the Romanian magazines, as was the case with The Scoffer Lark newspaper.
