Abstract

The article "The Dialects of Spanish. A Lexical Introduction" presents a study on the dialects of Spanish in 21 Spanish-speaking countries. The study focuses on 68 concepts related to food, clothing, vehicles, and other topics. 519 variants were collected through online surveys applied to 319 speakers. The book presents the history of the words for each concept and is divided into five chapters, including dialectal maps and glossaries. The text analyzes the concepts related to vehicles and other topics in dialectal Spanish, highlighting variations in the lexicon and mentioning some of the concepts investigated. The reasons for lexical variation in Spanish, such as geography and different climates, are also discussed. The existence of thirteen dialectal maps illustrating the lexical geography of the Hispanic world is mentioned, although the author is criticized for not proposing a dialectal division based on the analyzed concepts. In general, the text is an introduction to the study of dialectal lexicon in Spanish and uses physical and digital resources to explore the variants and their history in the Hispanic world.
