Abstract
- This article presents neuro-otologic findings in a case of superficial siderosis with bilateral hearing impairment. Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system, a rare disease, is characterized by a progressive loss of hearing, cerebellar dysfunction, pyramidal tract signs, and the development of dementia. It is caused by the deposition of hemosiderin in the leptomeninges, subpial tissue, spinal cord, and cranial nerves as a result of chronic subarachnoid hemorrhages. A 49-year-old Japanese man presented with an indistinct feeling of discomfort in the head and a floating sensation while walking that first became evident after a 30-minute attack of vertigo and then persisted for 4 months.
