Abstract

This article states that the implementation of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive bas been delayed until next January. The European directive, which attempts to boost recycling of electrical goods through the "polluter pays" principle, was due to come into effect on August 13. The Department of Trade and Industry's WEEE implementation team said the government had encountered major practical difficulties in working towards the August deadline. Like several other European Union states, Great Britain wants more time to ensure that the directive is applied correctly.
