Abstract

The matter of eternity is among the issues that started to be questioned in pre-Islamic beliefs and still continue to be discussed in the religion of Islam. The fact that human beings, who would like to reach eternity in the face of the finiteness of life in the world, and who believes that eternity will be in the hereafter according to the teachings of Islam, find eternity in the hereafter has added a different dimension to their searches and therefore required them to direct their actions in the world. The desire to avoid sins and rebellions that will lead them to hell, to do the deeds that will bring them to heaven, and to be blessed with shafa’a (intercession) has consequently arisen. If the destination is hell, it is at least desired not to stay there forever, but to enter heaven by intercession and reach eternity. In this context, Bursevi, one of the well-known commentators of the Ottoman Empire, touched upon this subject in his commentary on Ruhu’l-beyan. This work, which was written by the author himself in about twenty-three years and presented as a sermon to Ottoman people, has been followed with interest from the time it was written until today. In fact, the commentary of Ruhu’l-beyan, which includes wisdom and knowledge, features narration, insight and ishari interpretation, also has important information about eternity. This study, which is on Bursevi’s view of the issue of eternity in the hereafter, is divided into two parts. In the first part, eternal life in the hereafter and the concept of intercession are emphasized and the discussions on the subject are briefly mentioned and the second part explores Bursevi’s views on eternity and intercession. As a result, the commentator’s perception of eternity in the hereafter is revealed, and who will stay in hell forever and whether believers who commit major sins can be included among those who will stay in hell forever are discussed. In addition, this paper aims to reveal the perception of intercession of the commentator by examining the issue of getting rid of hell with intercession. The characteristics of those who will intercede and who will be interceded are specified, and eternity in heaven is emphasized. This study reveals the commentator’s views on the nature of eternity in heaven and the spiritual stages (maqam) to be reached after the blessings of heaven. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
