Abstract

A nematic liquid crystal in a slot electrohydrodynamic convection geometry exhibits, with increasing drive, enhanced noisy high-dimensional flow fluctuations and weakened low-dimensional ordered flow, reaching a turbulent state with only short range velocity correlations in space and time for sufficiently high voltage. Upon additional voltage increase this disorganized turbulent state develops spatial order with extended temporal correlations, in the form of a one-dimensional periodic array of turbulent jet-like plumes along the slot. This array becomes more robust with reduced disorder and faster fluctuations as the drive is further increased. Remarkably this ordering depends sensitively on liquid crystal alignment conditions on the surface of the slot cell. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
