Abstract

The objective of this study is to understand how the Umbanda movement of the beginning of the 20th century, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, anchored in the announcement of Umbanda by the Caboclo das Sete Encruzilhadas, on November 15, 1908, outlined a religious ethos with a clear racist outline. This is a qualitative research with an exploratory approach and discourse analysis. Based on the analysis of the discursive construction of the I Congress of Umbanda Spiritism (1941), we sought to elucidate concepts that could relate the construction of the religious ethos to the process of whitening the religion. The results of the research indicated that the de-Africanization of religion was an intentional strategy of "cleansing" of religion articulated by the white middle class to amalgamate the process of legitimating religion in urban society.
