Abstract

Suicide is an increasing mental health issue worldwide and has explanatory bases in many cultures. The reported rates of suicide can often be underestimated because in many societies and countries, the act of suicide is considered to be illegal and punishable by law. Cultural factors such as gender role, religion, sexual orientation, poverty, unemployment, economic downturn and other factors can play a significant role in contributing to the incidence rates of suicide and its explanation. In clinical assessments and management, it is critical to be cognisant of cultural factors and the role that culture can play in suicide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
