Abstract

The damage produced by cryopreservation processes on ovine spermatozoa reduces semen quality and therefore its fertilising capacity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding different concentrations of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol (DHPG) to sheep semen during the cryopreservation process. For this purpose, the sperm, once collected, were pooled and diluted with Biladyl, supplemented with different concentrations of DHPG (59 µM, 177µM, 295µM and 413µM), leaving a control treatment without antioxidant supplementation. Motility, viability, acrosome integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were assessed. No significant differences were observed derived from the addition of DHPG for all the studied variables, with the exception of the LPO, which was reduced in comparison to the control treatment when the samples were cryopreserved. It was therefore concluded that the addition of DHPG has a positive effect on thawed sperm as they reduced LPO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
