Abstract

Aging is a systemic, dynamic, and progressive process accompanied by several changes. Thus, as age advances, infectious processes, such as Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), can grow progressively. UTI is one of the infectious diseases that most affect humans. In view of this, it is worth emphasizing the importance of nursing professionals' knowledge about risk factors and preventive measures for UTI in the elderly. The objective of this study was to address the general aspects of UTI in the elderly, including the main risk factors and preventive measures that should be adopted by the nursing team. This is an integrative literature review, carried out between June 2020 and April 2021. Primary articles were included, available in full, in Portuguese and that answered the guiding question. Among the main risk factors for UTI in the elderly, the previous pathological condition stands out; immunity implications; hospitalization and invasive procedures. In view of the importance of preventing UTI in elderly patients, the nursing team should seek to improve the scientific basis on this topic for the implementation of protocols and safe care practices, to guarantee the quality of care.
