Abstract

Attila, the ruler of the European Hun Empire, like his predecessor Hun rulers, established political and military relations with both Eastern and Western Roman empires. In the context of this article, Attila's relations with the Western Roman Empire were initially built on the basis of friendship and military alliance but later evolved into a process that would lead to the occupation of Gaul and Italy. Attila's invasion of Italy also included the plan to besiege the ancient capital Rome. This article deals with the historical course of Attila's relations with the Western Roman Empire based on available sources and tries to reveal the reasons behind Attila's invasion of Gaul and Italy and the consequences of these invasions for the Western Roman Empire and European history.
