Abstract

In addition, the article highlights that by consciously portraying women lawyers as particularly talented and professionally successful, television shows such as I Onna wa sore wo yurusanai i challenge dominant biased attitudes towards female lawyers in Japan. The article studies Sujata Massey's I Perveen Mistry Investigates i three-part novel series and its lawyer-detective heroine Perveen Mistry, who is based on Cornelia Sorabjee and Mithan Lam, the first female Indian lawyers. The article contends that the portrayal of Perveen Mistry is noticeably different from more common depictions of women lawyers in screen productions for two main reasons.
