Abstract

A conceptual metaphor constitutes an analogical thought process that has its literal manifestation in linguistic expressions that we use in everyday life. The metaphorical reasoning reveals the social dynamics and ideological positions under which the processes of subjectivation are inscribed. Under this cognitive linguistics approach, we analyze the metaphors that Chilean women attribute to food and their bodies. We interviewed 35 women between the ages of 25 and 60 belonging to various socioeconomic strata. The results revealed the existence of a set of normalizing metaphors, that transmit ideologies that seek to perpetuate patriarchal and consumer values that negatively arise from the relationship of women with their food and their own bodies. Secondarily, metaphors arose that pose a resistance to the model and with it a possible transition towards the construction of a subjectivity detached from the patriarchal gender order.
