Abstract
- This document is a closure to a study on the design considerations for high-speed flow in sewer systems. The authors appreciate the comments and interest from discussers regarding the hydraulic characteristics of high-speed flow in sewers. The paper discusses the maximum allowed flow velocity as an important design criterion, but the rationale for the limits is still unclear. Municipalities are seeking ways to increase the velocity limit, but this can lead to unfavorable flow conditions and damage to infrastructure. The document also addresses the Froude number calculation, the possibility of cavitation in sewers, the occurrence of roll waves, and the need for further study on damage mechanisms and specific criteria for bend and junction manholes in sewer systems.
