Abstract

This article discusses the history of press freedom in India and its current state under right-wing nationalism. It highlights the regulatory controls placed on the press, such as the Press (Objectionable Matter) Act 1951, and the establishment of the Press Council of India. The article also explores the challenges faced by the press during the 1975 emergency, the rise of right-wing populism, and the impact of social media on media landscapes. It emphasizes the strategies used by the right-wing media to discredit mainstream media and suppress critical voices.
