Abstract
- The article discusses the role of epigenetic regulation in the progression of diabetic nephropathy, a major cause of chronic kidney disease in individuals with diabetes. The authors conducted methylation sequencing on DNA samples from patients with type 1 diabetes and identified reduced DNA methylation at key transcription factor binding sites in genes associated with insulin signaling, lipid metabolism, and fibrosis. They also found that decreased methylation correlated with declining kidney function. The findings suggest that DNA methylation status could serve as a biomarker for predicting the progression of diabetic nephropathy and may inform personalized therapies. However, further research is needed to understand the continuity of DNA methylation alterations and to apply these findings to type 2 diabetes and other populations. [Extracted from the article]
