Abstract
- This article discusses the anesthetic management of a child with a programmable magnetic ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt in the MRI suite. The Codman–Hakim shunt is a magnetically programmable VP shunt used for the management of hydrocephalus. During MRI, the shunt may experience field interactions or reprogramming. The article provides information on the anesthetic management of such cases, including the use of MRI compatible monitors, covering the shunt with a cotton pad, and administering anesthesia with inhaled sevoflurane and intravenous medications. Precautions and guidelines for the shunt's pressure setting and proximity to magnets are also discussed. The article emphasizes the importance of neurosurgeon consultation and the knowledge of these unique implants for safe anesthesia administration. [Extracted from the article]
