Abstract

"Nullius: The Anthropology of Ownership, Sovereignty, and the Law in India" by Kriti Kapila explores the concept of dispossession in India through anthropological inquiry. The book examines the relationship between property ownership and practices of sovereignty-making by the colonial and postcolonial Indian state. Kapila uses ethnographic fieldwork, historical archives, and primary sources to investigate different paradigms of dispossession, including indigenous land title, museum and heritage goods, and India's digital system of citizen identification. The book offers a fresh perspective on the anthropology of the state and challenges existing frameworks of sovereignty and state-subject relations. [Extracted from the article]
