Abstract

The article reports that Raytheon Aircraft Co.'s Flight Test Operations has some exotic distinctions, including flying the world's last squadron of Douglas A-3 Skywarrior bombers and a DC-10 with an open port for sensor observation that is believed to be the largest in the world on a currently flying aircraft. The DC-10, called the Widebody Airborne Sensor Platform aircraft, was located, modified and flown by Raytheon for the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. Its most recent mission, supporting Aegis ship-based ballistic missile tests, was to record the launch of ballistic missiles targets dropped by parachute from the back of a cargo aircraft.
