Abstract

The article discusses the challenges and benefits of conducting multinational clinical trials in the academic research setting. While most industry-sponsored trials are multinational, the majority of investigator-initiated trials are conducted in a single country. The article highlights the barriers that researchers face when planning multinational trials, such as differing regulatory and ethical approvals, language diversity, and funding availability. To support academic researchers in conducting multinational trials, the European Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (ECRIN) was created. ECRIN provides support in planning, design, and implementation of trials, as well as advocating for the academic research community and developing tools to facilitate cross-border collaboration.
