Abstract

Jennifer Lackey's book, "Seeking and Speaking the Truth: Criminal Testimonial Justice," explores the issue of testimonial injustice within the criminal justice system. Lackey was inspired to write the book after learning about the wrongful conviction of Demetrius, a 15-year-old African-American male who was coerced into confessing to a crime he did not commit. Lackey argues that false confessions, unreliable eyewitness testimony, and coercive plea bargaining practices are all examples of testimonial injustice, which undermines the agency and credibility of individuals involved in the criminal justice system. Lackey calls for a radical change in how confessions and testimonies are viewed and treated within the legal system. [Extracted from the article]
