Abstract

Snakebite envenoming is a serious medical condition that primarily affects rural communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and New Guinea. It causes significant mortality, morbidity, and disability, and has a direct economic and social impact on families and communities. Despite its global impact, snakebite has received little attention from the global health community and has a low priority in the global health research agenda. However, there have been efforts to raise awareness and include snakebite in the global strategy to combat neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The integration of snakebite prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation resources into the strategies to fight NTDs would offer great health benefits to vulnerable communities.
