This paper analyzes the cases of quesuism documented in the 18th and 19th centuries in European and American Spanish based on the data provided by Corpus diacrónico del español (CORDE), Oralia Diacrónica del Español (ODE), Post Scriptum, Corpus de documentos Españoles Anteriores a 1800 (CODEA+ 2015) and Corpus Diacrónico y Diatópico del Español de América (CORDIAM). To this end, it pays attention to different parameters that may be relevant to understand the spread of this phenomenon: the discursive genres in which this construction appears, its geographical distribution, the possible influence of the gender variable or the cultural level of the speaker, the syntactic function of the sequence que su, the type of relative in which it predominates, and the characteristics of the possessors and the possessed. On the other hand, this paper deals with some of the possible causes of the spread of this phenomenon: its use as an invisible variant of cuyo, the analytical tendency of Spanish, the speaker's ability to resort to reduplicative structures, the formal transparency, the communicative efficiency, the complexity, and singularity of cuyo, or the consideration of this as an excessively cultured form.
