Abstract

Adolescence is a crucial period in the lives of young people where certain behaviors are experienced that can have certain repercussions in adult life. The aim of this study was to identify the relationships between a healthy lifestyle and self-esteem in adolescent students, as well as to check if there are differences according to sex. This descriptive, cross-sectional study involved a total of 743 students between 14 and 19 years of age from different schools in the province of Almería (Spain). The instruments used for data collection were the Healthy Lifestyles Questionnaire (CEVS-II) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The results obtained highlight the positive association between self-esteem and positive habits such as healthy diet; however, the relationship was negative with the dimensions associated with consumption. Differences were found according to sex, with boys standing out in healthy diet, respect for mealtimes, rest habits, physical activity, and self-esteem, while girls scored higher in alcohol consumption. The need to promote healthy lifestyle habits in adolescence to enhance the personal wellbeing of young people is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
