Abstract
- Static poverty analyses only determine the number of poor people in the population over a given time period, but this aspect reveals a flaw in poverty research. Thorbecke (2007) claims that one of the unresolved issues of poverty is directly or indirectly on the dynamics of poverty. In other words, including the time dimension in poverty analysis is necessary to gain a more comprehensive understanding of poverty. In this study, which takes a dynamic approach to the concept of poverty, the determinants of chronic poverty in Turkey are investigated with a random-effects panel ordered logit model, by using the micro-panel data of the Income and Living Conditions Survey which is published by the Turkish Statistical Institute for the period of 2015-2018. According to the findings, the probability of being temporarily and chronically poor decreases as the age of the individuals increases, the level of education increases, their health status improves and they are being employed. It has also been observed that the probability of being temporarily and chronically poor increases as living conditions become more difficult. Furthermore, women are less likely to be temporarily and chronically poor than men, while married people are more likely than singles to be temporarily and chronically poor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
