Drawing on the concept of “left-wing melancholia”, introduced by Enzo Traverso, this paper explores Eric Hobsbawm’s melancholic perspective on the short twentieth century. It evaluates Hobsbawm’s hypothesis about the role of fear of communism in social­‑democratic reforms and argues that social-democratic intellectuals, both in history and political economy, share his pioneering diagnosis.
