Abstract

In this study, the basic features of the agricultural structure in Gemlik, Gönen and Manyas in the mid-19th century are examined based on Ottoman archival documents. Based on the tithe collection data of these three districts, it was determined what kind of products were grown and also the total production figures were tried to be estimated by multiplying the tax amounts by ten. In the article, a brief analysis is made on the structure of the population in three districts, since it is a decisive factor that directly affects the amount of agricultural production. According to the data of the mid-nineteenth century, it is understood that a population of 12.000 lived in Gemlik, 7.700 in Gönen and 3.700 in Manyas. There was also a large non-Muslim population in Gemlik consisting of Rum and Armenians. A small number of Rum populations lived in Gonen and Manyas. Gemlik was prominent in viticulture, olive and fruit production because of its land structure. Cereal production was higher in Gönen and Manyas. The central government demanded products such as wheat, barley, olives, timber, forest products, sedge, grapes and fresh fruit from these three districts in order to meet the needs of both the army and the people of Istanbul, especially since the end of the eighteenth century due to the aggravated provisioning problems. It can be thought that these demands had a positive effect on agricultural production in the region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
