Abstract

This study examines the molecular interactions and thermal characteristics of supramolecular hydrogen-bonded liquid crystals, utilizing FTIR and thermal analysis techniques. Our investigation focuses on the hydrogen-bonded liquid crystal system of p, n-alkoxy benzoic acid: nonyl-p-hydroxy benzoate (nOBA: 9HB), specifically with 'n' values of 6, 7, and 8. The intermolecular interactions between the COOH donor of liquid crystal p-n alkoxy benzoic acid and the OH acceptor of non-liquid crystalline compound nonyl-p-hydroxybenzoate (9HB) result the supramolecular system through hydrogen bonding. The existence and applicability of newly formed systems depend on the strength of the bond formed between the molecules and the stability of the complex system. Here, the molecular vibration method of FTIR and thermal analysis techniques are employed to characterize the supramolecular systems (nOBA: 9HB, where n = 6,7, and 8). Results obtained from this investigation explain how the presence of hydrogen bonds influences the molecular and thermal properties of liquid crystal complexes towards the improvement of device performance and their utility in biological applications.
