Abstract

The success of revolution in Saint-Domingue and the emergence of the Republic of Haiti was watched carefully in France, with both horror and fascination that varied in their proportions as the new republic went through political crises. Through a content analysis of two popular bourgeois periodicals founded in the first half of the nineteenth century, La Revue des Deux Mondes and L'Illustration, it is possible to assess the ideological and cultural impact in France of events in Haiti through the middle and late nineteenth century. Articles published in these periodicals were examined for the topics they presented from 1830 to 1901. The paper presents an analysis of these findings, especially the relative importance of the question haïtienne during this period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
