Abstract

This study divided the various chronicles of Nueva España into two periods (the conquest period, the mexican colonial period), and analyzed the characteristics and changes of each period, focusing on three themes (America, indigenous peoples, and history of conquest). The chronology of the first period began from the perspective of european supremacy based on christian centralism. The Americas were the object of conquest and looting under the pretext of christian propagation, and the natives were merely inferior species object to labor exploitation. Some chronicles took the lead in protecting indigenous peoples by informing the outside world of this reality. However, entering the second period, chronology became a tool of colonial authorities to redefine theological and legal status of indigenous peoples and justify spanish conquest and domination. Chronicles from mestizo also appeared, but they could not break away from the mainstream tone centered on christian denominations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
