Abstract

The article discusses the destruction of a historic mosque in Gaza as part of a larger campaign of erasure and ethnic cleansing. The mosque, known as the Great Omari Mosque, had a long and complex history, being converted between a church and a mosque multiple times over the centuries. The destruction of the mosque is seen as a deliberate act by Israel to erase Palestinian life and culture. The article also highlights the unequal attention given to the destruction of cultural heritage in the West compared to the loss of the mosque. It argues that the devaluation of tangible culture is connected to the devaluation of the people who built it. The destruction of both buildings and lives is seen as part of the same goal of destruction that needs to be stopped. [Extracted from the article]
