Abstract

This work explores the suitability of a raw material for earthen constructions in semi-arid climates. The work deals with the mechanical and hygrothermal behavior of unstabilized rammed earth samples fabricated by one-dimensional static compression. The performance of the compacted material was assessed by investigating the unconfined compressive strength, moisture buffering, and thermal conductivity. The experimental results indicated that when the material is compacted at pressures no less than 50 MPa, the compacted material possesses a compressive strength between 1.5 and 3.5 MPa under natural winter and summer conditions. The material also possesses a good moisture buffering capacity and relatively low thermal conductivity values, indicating a promising hygrothermal performance. Yet, the material is not expected to show reliable resistance against erosion unless protective or stabilizing agents are introduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
