Abstract

This document is a special issue of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences focused on the molecular mechanisms of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). DKD is a major complication of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, accounting for over 40% of patients with end-stage renal disease. The articles in this issue explore various aspects of DKD, including the role of the proximal tubule and tubulointerstitial compartment, the contribution of podocyte injury, chronic systemic inflammation, and the imbalance between oxidative stress and antioxidant defense mechanisms. The articles also discuss the involvement of hypoxia-inducible factors, gut dysbiosis and microbiota-derived metabolites, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, and lysophosphatidic acid receptor 1 in the pathogenesis of DKD. The research presented in this issue highlights the importance of early diagnosis and personalized therapeutic approaches for DKD in patients with type 2 diabetes. [Extracted from the article]
