Abstract

This article discusses the association between the HLA-C*04:01 allele and severe COVID-19. HLA genes play a crucial role in the immune response to pathogens by presenting antigens to T cells. The study analyzes patient data and identifies HLA-C*04:01 as a marker for disease severity. While the association has been observed in multiple studies, the frequency of the allele in different populations may affect the significance of the association. Further research is needed to understand the interplay between SARS-CoV-2 and HLA genes. The findings can inform clinical management and identify at-risk individuals and populations. The research was funded by the Government of Canada and supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. [Extracted from the article]
