Abstract

The FDA has approved a liquid form of the antibiotic metronidazole for patients who have difficulty swallowing or high taste sensitivities. The oral suspension comes in a strawberry-peppermint flavor and has a 2-year shelf life with no refrigeration requirements. Metronidazole is used to treat trichomoniasis, anaerobic bacterial infections, and amebiasis in adults and pediatric patients. Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues, unpleasant taste in the mouth, and dermatologic and hematopoietic issues. Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a parasite, while amebiasis is caused by a parasite and is often associated with poor sanitary conditions. [Extracted from the article]
