Abstract

The article discusses the anterolateral approach (ALA) as a surgical technique for accessing the mid and lower clivus, jugular foramen (JF), craniocervical junction, and cervical spine. The authors describe the microsurgical anatomy of ALA using cadaveric specimens and report on their clinical experience with seven patients who underwent ALA for benign JF tumors with extracranial extension. The article provides detailed information on the surgical procedure, including the skin incision, muscle dissection, and the location of important structures such as the accessory nerve, internal jugular vein, and carotid arteries. The authors conclude that ALA is a valuable approach for these types of tumors and that understanding its anatomy enhances surgical competency. [Extracted from the article]
